Barrow Bairns Rev Up for the 125!

Last Friday was time for leather jackets and cool shades as some of our smallest schoolchildren celebrated the last day of the Easter Term and the launch of the Barrow 125 Heritage Trail at Barrow AFC.
Over a hundred local tots from three different Central Barrow schools dressed as Mods and Rockers to ride out round the Holker St ground on balance bikes with Bluey the mascot in attendance and some fun obstacles to ride through.
“The idea was to promote the active side of Barrow 125 in a fun way,” said organiser and St George’s Head Steve Herbert. “The Heritage Trail will obviously pass through Holker Street and we hope lots of families will use it as an opportunity to walk, cycle and explore Barrow AFC and Barrow heritage together, in a different way for the anniversary.”
Children from Ramsden Infants, Greengate and St George’s were kitted out in the ‘pit lane’ with the most decorated balance bike going to the ‘ace face’ Mod or Rocker in each group, who were brought to and from the ground by nursery and reception staff.
“The Barrow AFC staff were lovely with the children and they really enjoyed it” said Simone Beech, Head of Sacred Heart while for Ramsden Infants Executive Headteacher Sue Jackson said, ” the children were buzzing- it was all they talked about when they got back to school.”
The trail itself is made up of ten different points around Barrow which relate to both the history of Barrow AFC and the launch of the Holland submarine which both began life in 1901, a hundred and twenty-five years ago.
The project has already seen an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ type event where a film was produced. and an exhibition is planned at the Dock Museum in July as well as the trail itself. The initiative was supported on the day by Active Cumbria, Barrow on Bikes and Bluebirds’ staff as well as schools.
The overall project itself is headed by supporters’ trust the Bluebirds Trust, along with Barrow AFC, the Dock Museum, Give em Beans fanzine and local initiative Step up and Play.
This collaboration involves schools, Barrow Town Council Community Fund, Unite Union local branch and Active Cumbria as well as national and international ground such as Football Heritage Podcast who support learning about football and community heritage throughout the world.
