As part of our 125-year celebration, we are delighted to announce that a Barrow AFC supporters’ team will take on Blackpool supporters in a re-enactment of our first fixture as a football club on Saturday 25th July at Strawberry Fields – Furness RUFC. The match will commence at 11:00 ahead of our pre-season friendly vs Blackpool at 15:00 on the same day.
The Strawberry ground hosted the Bluebirds first fixture vs Blackpool back in 1901 – to commemorate this Barrow 125 have organised an 11 v 11 game at the same location that fixture took place.
Our first game took place on Monday 2nd September 1901. An excellent crowd of around 4000 spectators had gathered to see the new Barrow team and were soon rewarded when Tommy Hall gave Barrow an early lead with a cracking shot. Both sides had chances to score but at the end of the first half, Barrow were still leading by a single goal.
Blackpool started the second half brightly and pressed Barrow, but the home side soon took possession and returned the pressure and from a straight shot, Tommy Hall once again scored for Barrow to open up a 2-0 lead. Tommy Hall moved to centre-forward and John Walker to inside right as Barrow went in search of further goals and after a spell of pressure, George Hammond scored Barrow’s third goal. Foster scored a late consolation goal for the visitors, and the result of a very entertaining game was Barrow 3 Blackpool 1.
Furness Rugby Club have kindly provided the facility and the bar will be open from 10:30 alongside this there will be limited parking onsite.
